What Is an Apostille?

An apostille is a government certification that verifies the authenticity of a document for use in countries that are part of the Hague Convention.

If the country you’re submitting your document to is a member of the Hague Convention, you will need an apostille.

If the country is not part of the Hague Convention, you will need document authentication + consulate legalization instead.

Since November 7, 2023, China Consulate legalization is NO LONGER required for most U.S. public documents because China Has Joined the Hague Apostille Convention.

  1. On March 8, 2023, China officially acceded to the 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents(Apostille Convention).
  2. On November 7, 2023, the Convention entered into forcebetween China and the United States.

What This Means for You

Starting November 7, 2023:

  • S. documents for use in Mainland Chinaonly require a U.S. apostille.
  • Consulate legalization is NO LONGER requiredby the Chinese Embassy or Consulates in the United States.
  • This change applies to most U.S. public documents within the scope of the Convention (birth certificates, marriage certificates, court judgments, notarized documents, school records, etc.).

This has made the process much faster, simpler, and less expensive for anyone submitting U.S. documents in China.

Each state issues its own apostille. Our office can assist only with public documents issued in California, or with declarations and affidavits that are signed and notarized in California.
